According to official figures recently published, the number of passengers flying into Lanzarote airport from other countries increased by a staggering 57.44 percent in April, compared to a year ago. Thus, the island received a total of 159,693 passengers from other countries. Of course, with Easter falling in April instead of March this year, the figure should not be taken too seriously.
However, looking at the first four months of the year still gives cause for optimism. The cumulative increase was 22.71 percent, from 481,430 in 2010 to 590,764 in 2011. In April, the British continued to head the list with 85,596 arrivals, an increase of 39.03 percent, followed by the Germans, with 27,373 tourists, an increase of 60.92 percent. However, of the 3 main nationalities, it was the Irish who provided the biggest jump, with a massive 83.05 percent more, totalling 14,346.
Also in the news, Lanzarote beaches continue to receive wide acclaim. We are particularly proud of the longest stretch of golden sand in Puerto del Carmen, aptly named Playa Grande, and voted recently as among one of the favourites in Europe. The latest news is the annual award of blue flags, which will continue to fly over the same five Lanzarote beaches as last year. Along with Playa Grande, they are: Matagorda, Los Pocillos, Chica (Pila la Barrilla) and Playa Blanca.Date Published: 25-07-2011
